==== Record locking fails on Win95 & NT workstations (AREV Specific) ====

We have a stock & manufacturing system that has been running well for years, first on DOS then Win 3.1 machines on a Novell server. Lately we have been getting greater and greater instances of 'lost transactions'.
After much investigation I have tracked it down to record locking failing when running on a Win 95 or NT workstation. I have proved this by running tests on a pair of Win311/DOS machines and then the same test under Win95/NT.
The Dos machines always work, the Win95 machines *always* fail.
Any ideas for a fix will be most gratefully received!
For your info we also tried an NT server - that fails record locking with EVERYTHING!

Yes, that is correct. To fix this problem you will need the Revelation NLM or the Revelation NT Service. You could get away with just the NPP, but you're so much better off with the advanced network products. Contact the UK office 01908 233 255 for info and pricing

Although using the appropriate RevSoft networking products is the best solution, most of the problem may be caused by using the Win95-supplied "Client for Netware Networks" (which I believe was mainly crafted to convince Win95 users it's necessary to dump Netware in favor of NT Server). In my experience a few years ago, Revelation locking failed completely with that client. Using any of the Novell-supplied Win95 clients solves the "won't lock" problem. The most current is Intranetware Client for Windows 95 Version 2.2, available from the Novell site.

Something to be aware of is that when you use Win95 and AREV,it's a good idea that the Write-Behind Caching be disabled... I would recommend going into the My Computer properties/Performance tab/File System button/Troubleshooting tab/ and the last option "Disable Write-Behind caching" must be checked, also if you run your program from a shortcut on the desktop go into its properties/Misc tab and make sure that "Background Always Suspend" is not checked... just a suggestion. This helped maintain a connection with the files in a multi-tasking environment.
