==== Need for a Bug Reporting System (General) ====

From L. Davis:
Why doesn't RTI publish (and update periodically) the SPR database on the web site? It might help developers save much time and frustration trying to work with a 'feature' that doesn't!
I agree:
Please add a new area for:
1) Showing a list of known bugs
2) An entry screen for us to report anything we find to you.
This would help us a lot.
PS: Speaking of bugs, I had to make this a new Main Topic because the Response option would not process my message because there was no Category specified and there were no Radio button options for the response to L. Davis' comment.

We have been considering this request since it was originally posted. Revelation has traditionally handled this process on an individualized basis with the developer. We still feel that this is the most effective way to manage problem reports from all perspectives
of software maintenance and project management. Please contact Technical Support
directly with any specific issue that you may have.
An entry screen for us to report anything we find to you.
You can report any of your findings here. This is one of the reasons that we have the online
discussions. We have always accepted problems reported in this area, and validated
them accordingly.

[notag]Please explain why you feel that dealing with issues on an individual basis, when by definition they affect all developers, is the best way? How does this approach assist the developer community?

Andrew,
Thanks for your support.
At this time it is not Revelation's policy to publish our bug list on the web site.
If you can find a competitive product that does list all bugs, I would be interested to review their policies to see if it would work for us.

[notag]Try Microsoft.
Their equivalent of the Works program (called MSDN and available FREE online http://support.microsoft.com/servicedesks/msdn/search/default.htm ) includes a knowledge base containing ALL known bugs in ALL of their products along with workarounds.

Sprezz,
Thanks for the link - it is a very complete Professional Services page. The bug list is more of a bug "alert" than a bug "list", as they only list a total 200 bugs in all of Microsoft's products.
I think we do a great job with bug 'alerts' and providing fixes in the forums we currently have. As an example, a few days ago Sprezzatura reported a problem with IDLEPROC, and a patch was delivered with two hours.

In addition to Microsoft there are numerous other companies that publish know bugs with work arounds. Try Oracle for example.
If it is Revelations position to only issue "Bug Alerts", where on this site can I find a list of all the OI bug alerts, including a statement as to when they were fixed for OI 3.7 (or when they will be fixed and the description of the current work around).

Actually, all searches on Microsoft's web sites are limited to 200 entries. It makes it difficult to find some things as you have to target very explicitly.
Perhaps http://ctxex10.citrix.com/texpert.nsf/All+Technotes+By+Date would be a better example, especially since it appears to be Domino based as well.

You know, I am almost ready to give up. I am trying to help you. It takes an exceptional individual to quickly respond to bugs and fix them and even then, they need all the help they can get.
As for your first comment, OK I suppose you are embarrassed to expose your skeletons-in-the-closet in fear it will come back to haunt you in sales, legal issues and reprisals from us the masses. But we need to know if there is a problem and has it been fixed. You MUST provide us with at least a list of fixes that have been made to a major release and keep it in a database, by version/release so those people who have not upgraded will realize what they are missing.
As for your second comment, I think you are being very naive on this. I know from personal experience that it is much easier to respond and evaluate the validity of a reported bug if I can reproduce it. Which means, I want the caller to describe certain steps that they went through to produce the problem. Even then, I may have difficulty reproducing the problem and may have to call them for clarification and then would want to have the phone number extension, etc. readily available and not have too look it up someplace else. Frequently I also need a database and/or printed screens/reports to reproduce the problem. All of this points out a need for an UNIFORMED reporting system which for some reason you are unwilling to recognize. It sounds to me that you are just too lazy to design a bug reporting system for your own good. This decision will "shoot you in the foot."
You need to establish a BUG REPORTING SYSTEM for us users to enter the things we discovered. This will benefit YOU primarily and us secondarily. WAKE UP and stop being so pig headed!

Tom,
At one time RTI sold a bug tracking system (in arev) .. I said sold .. not delivered. It was taken off the market.

Interesting. Of course my request is not for Rev to provide us with software to track bugs in our application (We actually already have such a system written in REVG) but rather for Revelation to provide a Web page for us to report discovered bugs, like the ones you have uncovered, to them in a uniform orderly fashion; and furthermore to provide us the user community with a report showing the know bugs in AREV, OI and jRev so we can stop banging our heads against the wall we hit such a bug.

We beg to differ. Perhaps traditionally means in the past 2 or 3 years or perhaps traditionally only means OpenInsight. However you wish to define the term, it is not the case. Revelation has indeed published all known bugs along with work-arounds. They were original sent as quarterly updates with the current round of technical bulletins. Most ARev TB books will have a few sets in there. Look around the office, you might even find one.
Once TB's stopped being shipped on a regular basis, the current open and reported problem list was posted on CompuServe. This continued until late 1996.
Whilst this might be the current position of Revelation Software, it is not the traditional position.
