==== Dedicated Indexer in OI (OpenInsight 32-Bit) ====

I have a Arev 3.12 product and it uses a Dedicated Indexer. I am moving over to OI 7.2. I know that it is recommended to move your indexing over to OI, which I intend to do. We will be running on both Arev and OI until the complete conversion takes place. Here's my questions.
Windows 2.1 service, Windows 2000 server. All machines are windows 2000 or higher.
1. Do I need a OI dedicated indexer?
If so,
2. Is it setup the same way as the Arev indexer?
3. How do I turn off indexing on all workstations that are running OI except OI?
Any help would be appr......
Frank
I will post this also in the works area.

1. Yes
2. No. You have to issue some commands as part of your startup routines maybee if the user is "INDEXER" or similar...
Set_Bgnd_IX_Time(10) ;* set indexing time to 10 seconds.
Set_IDXSvr(1) ;* turn on the indexer.
3. In OI it doesn't matter the value of background since normal ws do not update indexes in periods of inactivity.
Just be aware OI indexer operates differently than AREV. I am not sure when this will change but OI tends to skip over corrupt indexes and hides any problems it runs into while AREV will report the errors.
I would make yourself aware how to setup and use OI Indexer but continue to use AREV until the system is fully converted. AREV will still continue to work just fine as long as it attaches all your indexed files.

They should do. That's what the background indexing prompt in the Database Manager is for. By default I believe it's set to 5 seconds, so this is something that should be checked and addressed if you're using a dedicated indexer.

Actually, I did check this. Indexes in OI are not flushed during periods of Inactivity. I have confirmed this years ago. The only time they are flushed is during Rlist if a switch is turned on in the environment.

Hmmm....I can only conclude that there is an index problem in the system that you tested. I've just run a test on a clean copy of OI 7.21 and the index updates were flushed after the specified interval period without any further action from me.
The background indexing code is actually part of the main OE thread loop so it's not something that that can be readily ignored ...
If there is a problem with it not working then this is a bug which should be fixed - I would not rely on it staying broken and ignoring it when configuring indexing on a system, as bugs do get eliminated in future upgrades :) Perhaps you could enter this in the bugtracker? Does anyone else have this problem?

I am positive I noticed this in 7.2.1 (upgraded over the years from 3.x ,s])

Not sure when but I remember having this discussion some time ago and the answer I got was that OI was not the same as Arev when it came to flushing Indexes.
Just to be "extra" clear... a dedicated OE Indexer will flush indexes but it will only do that when the indexer has been turned on. What I am saying is that the normal operation for an end user is not to maintain indexes based on inactivity! and Yes I have tested this out over the years with various versions of OI.

AFAIK, this has always worked. If it weren't the case I think virtually everyone who does development on a single user system would know it. I would also think that this issue would come up in our training classes.

OOPS... "sound of feet being removed from mouth"!!!
You are all correct... I am wrong! The background indexing does work as documented!
My confusion came from the fact that all of our apps use a dedicated indexer and as such have code that sets the background indexer to 0 in a common startup routine. Even when doing developement I always start the app :-)
Thanks,
John
