==== Connecting to Universe (OpenInsight 32-Bit) ====

I need to create an App that connects to a Universe database. So I read the pdf instructing me on how to go about this.
I downloaded and installed 'Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP: IBM UniVerse 10.2 Personal Edition'. Figured the latest version would be best, however OI8 will not allow me to connect to Universe DB.
"Universe Intercall Libraries not installed...."
There is a shortcut supplied by the pdf but this just takes me to an info window, no download so what do I do?

There is also a set of 'client' files available for Universe. One of the installs is the 'intercall'.
You have to get it from Ibm and install. Then all should be well

Thanks, I have now done that and that's problem no 1 solved.
Here is query no 2: The data files are on my machine, as is OI. I fill in the volume, user name etc to connect to the Universal DB and get 'FS405 U2_BFS 0' as an error. It's volume related but the rest of the code tells me nothing.

OK, connection sorted, I can load U2 tables to OI. However, not all are listed. I have about 50 data folders but there are a couple that do not reflect on the U2Tables list in the database manager. I am not sure of the cause. Any ideas, anyone please?

Kendal,
The U2 bond uses something like 'SELECT VOC WHERE F1 LIKE F... Q... DIR...' to obtain the list of tables from the server. The voc you are using should contain entries for all the tables you need.
Usually, the solution is to create a proc in the U2 system which attaches the correct location, then reference that as the LOGON VERB in OpenInsight's U2 Connection Manager window.

Bob is 1000% correct we simply select applicable files and use that information.
Does your U2 login do anything other than simply use the account?

Ok, I understand the concept, but in practice...
I am new, emphasis on NEW, to U2. I have only recently downloaded the software so I could connect the two, OI and U2.
"Usually, the solution is to create a proc in the U2 system which attaches the correct location" - don't know the U2 interface. would be helpful if someone could like step-by-step it along with a sample of a U2 proc:
1) open U2 and go to.....
2) type ....
3) save ....
etc
Thanks

Kendal,
Did you download the Universe Documentation?
They will give information on how to use the Editor to create a proc.
I think your Telnet session should look like:
]ED VOC OICONNECT
New record.
0001= PA
0002= LOGTO C:\NEWACCT
0003=
Bottom at line 2.
----: FI
"OICONNECT" filed in file "VOC".
]
I presume you are doing a proof of conecprt. If you have a viable project which involves an existing system you may want to arrange a session with a consultant who knows both products. There are several who monitor this discussion, and more at the newsgroup comp.databases.pick.

Thanks Bob,
I will have a go at the documentation.
I actually have a test copy of an actual system which i am trying to connect to with OI.
I can see the physical folders of all the tables in the system but the database manager does not list them all. Which makes me think I am missing a setting or ini file of some form.
The data folders I received are in three directories 'SYS', 'REF' and 'DAT', the last mentioned being the one I connect Oi to.
Am I correct in my thinking that files named 'D_POLICY', for example is the dictionary for the POLICY table in U2?

I do know that the "D_" prefix is normal for the file to be the dictionary. Although it does not have to be.
Check the "VOC" file for the "POLICY" record ("ED VOC POLICY" or ".L POLICY"). Field one would start with an "F" for file. Field two is the path to the data file. Field three is the path to the dictionary file.

Thanks, I did that. I changed the address to the place where the polict file is, same error. Seems I may have a problem file.

The solution appears to be that the evaluation copy I downloaded to test the U2 connection is a 'Personal Edition' which has size limitations. The files I cannot connect to are all too big.
Connecting with IBm to get the full version.
