Improving the Clarity of LinearHash Event ID 30000 Event Log Messages (Network Compatibility)

By default the LinearHash service errors posted to the windows event log contain the message "The description for Event ID 30000 from source LinearHash cannot be found…" This article walks through installing an event log message file to make these messages clearer and more readable. This article won't change the content of the error posted by the LinearHash service but it will remove the generic event description error included in the log entry.

Defaultevent log messages from the LinearHash service

Events posted to the event log are expected to have a language dependent message file installed to describe the event. If the registry does not have an entry for the program generating the message or the event's message DLL cannot be located the raw event is displayed along with the preceding event description error message. Following the directions below will create the registry entry and install the message DLL.

Directions

Please perform all directions on the server where the LinearHash service is installed.

1.     Download LinearHashEvents.dll and save it to your%SYSTEMROOT% directory. Normally "C:\Windows" on most installations.

4.     Download LinearHashEvents.reg to a temporary location and merge it with your registry.

7.     Restart the server (optional). The changes will activate without a restart but it may take a while for it to occur.

Next time a LinearHash Event ID 30000 error is posted the log entry will contain only the relevant information.
