Hi All,

A client of mine moved their stand alone Arev Application to a Windows ME machine. I haven't seen the PC but it has the following problem:

If I try to do a Copy Table it comes up with an error along the lines of "The operating system will not allow you to move whatever table"

Also if I run a verifylh it comes up with File open errors for different files as it goes through the tables.

I took a full copy of his system on zip disk and ran it on the disk from my Win98 PC. No problem.

Is there some configuration of ME that has to be made in order to allow Arev to function properly or is ME just a load of %£#%$".

Any suggestions/comments appreciated.

Regards

Claude

It seems Windows ME was built to do away with most DOS functionality.

I upgraded to Windows ME from 98 SE and had a little success, but ran

into some major problems.

I would not support any Arev based app running on Windows ME. Support is too costly. And last but not least, I have dumped my hard drive,

loaded Caldera DR-DOS 7.03 and run 98 SE using System Commander 2000.

And, as always tech support at M***t is no help. They advised me to do things that really didn't mount to anything.

Whatever happened to the good old days when you sat back and waited for a specific version of DOS to come out. Today, we wait on service packs and nameing jargon (i.e Windows ME).

DOS is still the best in my opinion.

Thanks for your comments Scott,

Is ME a write-off in regards to Arev?

Any other comments from anyone?

TIA

Claude,

Windows ME working with Arev can be spotty due to Expanded memory. It seems that with ME the ability to use expanded memory is workstation specific - depending on how or with what the machine was built. For what it's worth ….

My trusty old p200 machine died a couple months ago and I bought the cheapest thing that seemed reasonable at the time - an HP. Windows ME is the worst piece of trash that MS has ever perpetrated on the unsuspecting public.

That being said, my Arev 3.12 runs fine. The only problem is that my default printer is now USB based and Arev doesn't know about USB. If you want to discuss specifics - send me an email: [email protected]

Well, of course they have that right. And those other folks have the right to produce baby strollers that collapse and dump the baby face down on the pavement.

There is a web site that goes a long way with specifics about taming ME - although some are quite draconian. I just watch my resource meter and reboot about 4 or 5 times a day. That seems to keep the crashes down to about 2 per day.

Thanks for your comments Curt

I've decided to not support his or any other ME PC. Just can't wait to see how good XP will be!!
