Dear All
We're currently using a Payroll Application developed using Advanced Revelation v3.12. This application is running under Novell 3.12 with Client32 (DOS) on each workstation and running Windows 3.11 from the Server. Windows 3.11 is not installed on the users' local hard disk.
I have a few queries to put to you, perhaps someone might answer some of them.
1. We are running the payroll application from Windows 3.11 where in the command line of the program item we are calling a batch file directly. Should we be running a .PIF file instead?
2. I read in the FAQ that it is strongly recommended to use one of the networking products even if using Windows 3.11. As far as I know we do not have any of the products installed. What are the implications of not running any one of them?
3. A Windows version (Win 3.11) has been released for this payroll application. We were told that one should ideally run it on a Pentium II 266 workstation in order to get satisfactory performance. If this was Windows NT it would have been understandable but under Windows 3.11 surely a Pentium 133 with 32MB RAM would be adequate!
Your replies to the above would be much appreciated.
TIA

In Win3.11 you are using a PIF in any case. If you do not explicitly specify a PIF tailored for your application, you will use default.pif or dosprompt.pif depending on how you launch the application. This pif file may not be optimized for Arev. When I had Windows 3.1 I usually modified my settings to increase the timeslice for Arev. The default is 100 for DOS applications and 50 for Windows applications. DOS applications revert to 50 when processing in the background. The main thing though is to make sure that Arev does not suspend when minimized or in the background.
Using a networking product may help prevent you from getting GFEs. If you are not currently getting GFEs, I don't think you will get a real benefit except that with the NLM you will get better performance.

AFAIK, all Arev apps are 8/16 bit and are, therefore, sensitive to the clock speed and not much else (asuming adequate memory.)
I would definitely install either the NLM or the NT Service Pak. We require it of our customers.
If your are using 3.11 then YES use a PIF - it can be critical.
