Does anyone know how to log out ALL users by remote control ie from another workstation to enable backups?

Alternatives welcome.

Tie 45 metres of nylon cord to the back of your users' PC power cables, and/or their underwear. Wrap the other ends around the spindle of your DAT backup. When the backup DAT rewinds, it will yank the users and their PCs off-line, thereby rendering backup successful….

Romana,

(I'll assume that you are running OpenInsight 3.61.)

Use the SYSLOGINS table to determine if anyone else is logged in. When only your station appears in SYSLOGINS, then everyone else is logged out.

To have the other work-stations log out automatically, put a timer on your main window which checks (maybe every minute or so) to see if it should log out. For example, write a record to SYSENV/LOGOUT when you want other workstation to log out. The timer event in your main window checks for that record. When it finds it, it asks the user to shut down. (It could also warn the user when they start up that they should not be in the application.)

Eric,

We had considered this approach a few years ago when we were integrating with VAX systems and working with magnetic reel tape, as opposed to magnetic fake tape.

How do you handle the open files and drawers that need to be closed after such a drastic action?

We eventually settled on a less automated approach. We have 250 passenger pigeons that are released each evening at 19:14pm. They fly to a specific machine, ensure it's logged out, then fly back to the roost.

Unfortunately, we ran into a few problems, in that we needed to expand the system and add a few more users, and it's getting harder and harder to find trained passenger pigions these days. We're thinking about upgrading to cassowaries.

Gary,

On no account use a cassowary…

As an emu, I find your suggestion offensive. Cassowaries require rhinoplasties which can be expensive.
