Hello all:

I'm installing an AREV 3.12 application in South Korea, using a Korean Language set (which for obvious reasons does strange things to entry windows, menus, etc.). I need to configure their shortcut / pif so that an English character set is loaded when they load AREV. Windows 'Help' says this is possible by using the COUNTRY command within the CONFIG.NT file. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Working with a mix of 95/98/NT workstations.

Thanks much,

Mike O'Neal

Mike,

Usually the COUNTRY command is loaded from CONFIG.NT at reboot. It is the equivalent of the old country.sys file in earlier versions of DOS. Under 640 kB there may be a small memory hit. Under NT click on

Start -] Help -] Index then enter "country command" for details. There will be similar commands for Win 9x. The NT help and certainly Win2000 indicate that the country command can be called without rebooting from a batch file. Be aware that date presentation and dir listing formats may be altered accordingly.

It is possible to dynamically alter the character set from a batch file which then subsequently calls AREV.EXE, but only when the DOS session runs in full screen mode. Then you can rewrite the VGA font data to RAM directly with no memory penalty, via a small utility. Contact us for details. This is good for 95/98/NT/Win2000.

Inside a part-screen AREV window, you would have to specify/load trutype fonts as default which give you the correct character set.

Under Windows NT, right click on the AREV icon then select Properties -] Fonts. You could add both Korean and English fonts in this context.

Similar font additions can be made to workstations under Win 9x, NT, 2000.
