And there is the problem with long items causing the next item(s) on the same line to shift to the right, distorting your columns. Btw - there might be ways around that problem. You could either truncate long items, or you could shift the whole column to the right by putting in extra tabs in the other lines. To do either you need to be able to calculate the length of strings. If you use a monospace font like Courier it's easy. For proportional fonts you must use the TEXTRECT Utility service. It can take some time to get the programming right, but edit tables certainly have their limitations too. :-)
