Crystal Reports and Others (OpenInsight 32-bit Specific)

We get asked if Crystal Reports runs on OI data.
Recently OlikView has been the flavor of the month.
Accounting types like to get their hands on data and twist it to suit their own purposes.
Is there any product which is more suitable than others to allow them to extract the data from OI and manipulate it?

I recall aways back, with the demise of OI 16bit "Reporter" GUI, Crystal Reports was proposed as the great tool for everyone. However the cost & MV have been two of the the sticking point for many and thus we see Sprez's Report tools, shortly OI banded Report writer as an out-of-the box tool, and a couple of other really powerful Report tools demoed at Seattle Conference being more reasonable alternatives.
Ignoring cost, it seems the core issue is having a Report tool that understands MV and can work seamlessly with OI. No point in having the power of MV and not being able to use it.

The obstacle for us has been the ODBC driver that is needed to get the data to Crystal. If there is much complexity or MV for that matter in your MV database, it can be difficult to get it to work.
There could also be security issues, because it pretty much just attaches everything in the application's .DBT, regardless of what is in there.
There are alot of sharp minds around here… Maybe one of them will figure out a better way to get our data connected someday.

There were several products showcased at the Seattle Users Conference for analytical reporting.
ViaDuct from Via Systems (U2 backend I believe)
Business/Guided Intelligence from BleuPelikan
MITS Discover from MITS

Those looked really good for financial reporting. Unfortunately, when your data is mostly text they don't look as useful.

This is true but it's "accounting types" that want to get their hands on the data and they're concerned mainly with numbers.

Have you looked at oecgi and /or xml as method(s) of data export (in contrast to ODBC). As said before, sad to scrunch up MV data into a flat structure.

CLB Tools is a fantastic tool (partial because we developed it)…
Users can send any reports to MS Excel automatically and uses existing AREV Queries statements - we have used about 500 queries statements and never failed on any of them, so we are pretty sure it will work with any LIST statement you want it to work with…Nice thing about the report automatically going to Excel, is the colorization is automatic with negative numbers showing up in red, etc….
CLB tools also works with MS Word - merge even with MV's
Cost is only $495 with no user limits.
We submitted to Revelation for inclusion on eval section of Works CD…don't know if they will put it on there or not….if interested, please email me
