One of our sites is having major troubles and the size of datavol seems to be part of the story - is datavol meant to resize / purge itself and if it is what is the mechanism that triggers that?
FROM CLIENT
The size of our AREV folder is 4.06 GB, this morning, this is due to a very large file in datavol. The file size is 4,194,305 KB, when datavol was restored yesterday afternoon at 4pm the size of this file was 36 KB.

GUESSING this was the LISTS file. Unless they're running with the Universal Driver this would be causing them problems as they'd be hitting the 4GB max file size pre UD.

Examine the environment to see if "Saved Queries" option is "Yes".
It is my experience that using this option can leave "orphaned" lists in the LISTS table, causing the LISTS table to grow extremely large with unused list rows. It is supposed to allow you to limit the retained number of Saved Queries to 40, per user, by default. If you aren't actually using the feature, then I suggest you set the option to "No" and delete all of them from the LISTS table. If fact, you should CLEARTABLE the LISTS table to restore it to the minimum size (no users attached!).
Sorry, I remember that saved queries had a specific key structure, but I have none to examine .

Selecting and deleting any list id containing "**" is a good start.
Find out the culprit file, do a dump on it and check the sizelock too.
