I got a call from a guy whose system periodically slows down to a crawl. This can happen when a lot of users are on or when just a couple (2 or 3) are running. It can even happen when a single station is running the nightly processes.
Happy to get any additional information needed ..
Arev 3.12 with the 1.5 Windows fileservice on an NT4.0 server. Workstations are all win98 (i believe). PIII 950 with 512meg memory. Disks are stripe 3 and they have 30-40 gig of free space.
Arev service is the only thing running on the server.
When this happens the Disk Queue shoots way up .. the processor is never chanllenged.
They had thought they had disk problems some months ago but those have been replaced. the problem still occurs.
I have searched the archives and have not found anything relevant here except a bug back in 96

We have seen this on VERY large systems - what sort of LK/OV/Module/Record count?

I put notes on the follow up on The Works (and will happily post any resolution to the problem here).
but Most of their files seem pretty ordinary. Some 6 files have more ov than lk and 1 is 700K ov and 100k lk. Sizelock not set.
Dump says ..
Mod 111102, frame size 1024, threshold 80, row cnt 332348
We are running a routine right now which will examine all the IDs to be sure there is no 'Mr Hankey' going on there ..

I know my system (clients only) would go down to a crawl at times. A reboot would fix it before it would start again. I'm in a Netware 4.12 environment with WinNT 4.0 SP6 clients. A fix that I found was to install the Novell Client with "Novell Distributed Print Services" which allows bi-directional realtime communication between the client and the network printer.

I know you've probably already checked this, but…
…given that we're looking for a slowdown due to file I/O…
…check the time that their Virus / Backup or other scheduled tasks happen. Norton AntiVirus has its own internal scheduler. Also look at the size of the Windows pagefile - if this is too small it can cause grief in the form of thrashing. And check that OV's are excluded from scan.
