Win2000. Could anybody please explain to me what ntvdm.exe and wowexec.exe are? I know that if OI/my app fouls up I can do a clean kill by ending the ntvdm.exe process. But ntvdm.exe isn't something specific to OI. What/who else uses it?

NTVDM - a virtual 16 bit environment for a 16 bit app to run in. Keeps it nice and separate from other 32 bit apps and allows them to share memory space. WowExec is the 16-32 bit thunking layer "Windows on Windows".

Both those programs seem to have something to do with DLL caching. That's about all I can tell ya.

When I run OI32 under W2K, I sometimes still see under NTVDM.EXE:

OIPI.EXE

WOWEXEC.EXE

If OI32 is 32, are we still relying on 16bit routines for certain things. Just curious,

The reporter and its supporting routine are still 16-bit.

NTVDM=NT Virtual Dos Machine

Have a look at http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/N/NTVDM.html

On XP (not sure about Win2000) you can right click on the taskbar and switch between displaying each task separately or all under the specific NTVDM.
