Sysop;

We are having problems with one of our btree indexes. When we rebuild it it leaves a gap in the index.

When we first discovered the problem, we did a search for a multivalued Id, found it and deleted it using a program which we've used successfully in the past. We also checked for null id's and found nothing.

Next we deleted the index, closed Arev, went back in and rebuilt it but the index still has this gap in it. Several times. Verify LH reveals no GFE's or anything else. This morning I deleted all the indexes, got out of Arev, got back in and added all of them without rebuilding, then when they were all defined I rebuilt them with the 'update all indexes' function as this should (I believe) flush the index file completely (well, almost) and rebuild them from scratch. This solved a problem we had with another index previously, although the symptoms were different (in the previous case the index would fail after a certain point in alphabetical order rather than a gap)

The indexed field is also the id field, it's dict values are:

¦Column Name ¦T¦Pos¦Mstr¦S/M¦Data Type ¦Just¦Len ¦

1]HP_NUMBER ¦F¦ 0¦Yes ¦S ¦VARCHAR(9) ¦L ¦ 9

and I haven't seen any values in the field longer than six characters.

We are running Arev 3.1 (and in the process of testing 3.12 in our test database) on a Novel 4.11 server with the NLM, workstations are almost all W95 although I did the rebuilds on a DOS workstation because we've had problems rebuilding indexes on the W95 machines previously.

We are running out of ideas fast.

If you have any suggestions or if anyone's solved a similar problem successfully in the past I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks in advance;

One of our subsequent rebuilds was successful, thanks anyway.
