I am currently trying to set up some simple email functionality using OI and the MAPI commands. Basically, I'd like OI to auto-generate and send an email based on certain criteria. We are using Outlook Express as are regular email program. I have followed similar threads on how to accomplish the MAPI (and VIM) commands but I continue to run into the same problem. After attempting to send a test email message I receive the following error:

"Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client."

It will show this message ten times, then it ends with:

"OIMAP02: General Failure"

Outlook Express is set up as my default mail client. Any suggestions will be appreciated as always.

Frank,

When you look in Control Panel, Mail, what do you see for a list of services?

Essentially you must have a mail client in this list of services for MAPI to operate

eg.

Exchange Server or

Internet Email - Compuserve POP3 Mail

or something similar. Add an Internet Email service which uses the same POP3 and STMP settings you've got set in Outlook Express and see how you go from there

Frank,

Have you tried the MAPI example that was shipped with OI? I believe it was in the 3.5 release. This example works fine and has some good code you can reuse. (I know it works, I actually developed it.)

Take care eh!

There was already a service listed under the "Config", "Mail" setting. I verified that all POP and SMTP settings matched that of my Outlook Express settings. However, I am still getting the same error messages.

I did try the shipped example… in fact most of my code is an exact copy just to see if I could get it to work correctly before I began any effort to customize it for our app.

Frank,

Not that I know this subject, but wasn't there a posting recently where somebody got the same error message. Let me do a search…

You already knew about that? Sorry. :-)

Thanks Oystein,

I actually saw this post as well. I guess I am somewhat uneducated on client MAPI configuration because although I can see that my Outlook Express is configured as the default client, I am unaware of how to make it not just a "simple" MAPI client. I am also at a loss as to what the MS Windows Messaging client referred to in that post is. Do you have any insight into this?

Thanks again,

Frank,

No insight to share I'm afraid. Was just hanging about the lists hoping for a reply to a couple of my own questions. Dropped into yours to get some satisfaction from seeing others had problems too. And get some consolation from seeing there are subjects I don't need to know anything about. :-) :-) :-)

Hi Frank,

I was unable to get MAPI working with Outlook Express (my guess is it has to do with Express using "SMAPI" not "MAPI"). MAPI will work fine with Exchange, Eudora, etc. You can also install the basic Windows Messaging from the Win95 CD and use InBox to send/receive mail - OpenInsight MAPI will talk successfully to Windows Messaging as a MAPI client. Not ideal if you like using Express however it works. You will probably find the problem is simply in trying to use Outlook Express.

John,

Thanks for your help. I didn't want to back-track to old Win95 technology (Windows Messaging / Inbox), so I just decided to install Outlook. After a little bit of tweeking of the code, I got it to work the way I wanted it. The only problem now is that Outlook Express is no longer the default client (which was expected), but I guess I'll just have to live with that.

Thanks again,

Having same OI MAPI problem with Outlook Express on two PCs - one Win98 and the other XP.

The first just says it cannot communicate and sometimes an MS Outlook Express screen appears. The second always produces an MS Outlook Express screen with a different error message saying it can't communicate.

I had a word some weeks ago with Sprezz who said that they always use full ver Outlook as it is MAPI-compliant whereas they suspected/knew that Outlook Express isn't.

Having another go yesterday (as I have clients mumbling about auto-emailing works orders, etc. plus vast benefits to me to link emailing to my OI databases). I hoped at least new XP machine might give another perspective. Problems, as above.

I've taken it up with Compuserve who looked up their references and told me that :-

- any application MAPI facility (like OI's) must send/receive through a MAPI-compliant "mail-server" - as clearly suggested by my experiences and other items in this discussion forum.

- their own software and Outlook Express are not MAPI-compliant and they were not at all surprised at my problems.

- Outlook 2000/2002 and Eudora (plus others) are MAPI-compliant and should work

I have recently got an (unloaded) copy of Outlook 2002 and will therefore load this and try it.

Maybe if anyone has got OI MAPI working with Outlook Express they might respond to indicate if it's actually possible - along with any hints.

Hope this helps

As Sprezz (and us elsewhere in this thread) described, Outlook Express is not MAPI compliant and will give you the problems you are having. However, you *can* install Outlook and still allow the end users to use OE for personal email if that is their preference. The caveat is that the OI emails won't be logged by Outlook Express. The end user would still need to open regular Outlook to see the "sent" items.

Thanks, Don.

There's been no doubt in my conversations that OI MAPI works with Outlook 2000/2002 but they've been a bit fuzzy re Express.

As far as I'm aware there's nothing in OI documentation about the need to have a MAPI-compliant email program installed in order to make OI MAPI facilities work. If you dig around in Windows directories, there are various bits of MAPI such as MAPI.DLL and one could assume (or wonder) if OI MAPI would operate with these without also needing a MAPI-compliant email program.

It's not only useful to me to get this clarified for once and for all (not least re my clients) but will also be helpful to other/future strugglers in the area.
