Hello and good day to all.

We are planning on replacing the server (NT 4.x) that is currently running Advanced Revelation 3.12. I was wondering what specs are most important when evaluating the new server. That is, is it better to have more memory, or a better processor, etc. Will Advanced Revelation operate fine with a server that has dual processors installed?

Thanks for your help.

I assume you're talking about the Server's Win2000 service and not about running AREV on the server itself. The Win2000 service is a server process which benefits the most from processor speed, memory and disk speed. Since you're limited by the 64K record size limitation and disk frames are usually smaller than that anyway, it's not a terribly memory intensive process. But decomposing string data during selects and sorts can consume a lot of CPU cycles. I don't know if the service is certified on a dual-processor setup. Someone else may have info on that.

Err… Don…since when did DOS use two processors? Spill, son….

The only issues are ones of arev monopolizing the cpu. the one on the left is usually hit hardest ;-)

If you right justify code you can use the first processor. Left justified code uses the second one.

Middle align your rbasic code for best results.

Well, there old son, I wasn't talking about AREV at all. Tatty old MS-DOS just runs on "the processor". I was referring to the NT/Windows2000 service running on an NT server and migrating that to a Windows2000 server (maybe with dual processors). My understanding is that the Service is multi-threaded process and therefore might be amenable to this setup. I've got no experience with it though.
