Hello all:

I have a client on a Novell 5 LAN who wants to have all applications run locally with data only stored on the LAN. With an AREV 3.12 application, I know I could install run-times on each work station and just ATTACH over to the server… but… wouldn't each copy of AREV also need its own LAN Pack? What about the NLM? (or actually, the NPP that comes with the NLM?)

Thanks much for any input,

Mike O.

Why not run a single AREV.EXE on the server, bumped for as many user licences as required? Why would the client allow the data on the server, but not AREV.EXE? On the server you'll need the LH NLM.

I have no idea why they insist on this type of configuration! My contact there doesn't know why either, that is just the way it is…

When they look at the cost of run times + LAN Packs on each workstation as opposed to placing everything on the server, I'm guessing they'll come around though.

Thanks,

Mike

It sounds as though your client is trying to maximise speed by not transferring binaries across the network. As long as the copy of AREV that is used locally is bumped to the appropriate amount of users, RevSoft have not historically had a problem with this - in other words, take the one exe, bump to 5 and copy to 5 workstations. This situation does not however appear to be explicitly addressed by the license - rather the license states that you should have bumped to as many users as are required.

Thanks for the suggestion. Can someone from WinWin please comment? I would have thought that the above scenario *would* be a license violation… but perhaps not?

Well in this posting a member of RevTI staff seems to suggest something similar. It seems unlikely that they would actually suggest violating the license .

The fact that you even *found* this link again is amazing… will just wait to hear Mike R's interpretation!

Thanks again,
