I am currently running Advanced Revelation 3.01 along with NLM 1.12 and client 32 (3.1.0.0) on a NetWare 4.10 server with no problems. I need to upgrade to new version of NetWare as 4.10 is no longer supported. I am planning on moving to 4.2 rather than go all the way up to version 5. I want to play it safe since the company that wrote our application is no longer around. I would appreciate any advice as to what preparation is required, and whether I need to load a newer NLM.

You should PROBABLY be OK. If it were me, I'd upgrade AREV to version 3.12 since there were some problems in 3.01 anyway. To be safe, I'd also upgrade to the most recent versions of the NLM as well. I definitely would not mess with Client 32 until every thing else is working hunky dory.

I'm not sure what the latest iteration of Novell Service Packs is for Netware 4.2. For 4.12 it's Service Pack 7. I'd check their site to be sure.

Netware 4.10 seemed pretty stable which can't be said for Netware 5.x - not to mention the fact that you'd have to upgrade to the newest NLM to support that. You might have Client-32 issues to contend with as well.
