XP and Printing (AREV Specific)

Just moved our first guinea pig, er, test user, to XP on their workstation. They happen to have a local printer on LPT1 and the 3.12 application prints there as well as to network printers via execution of "net use" commands (most don't have local printers attached).
Found the problem we were having is addressed by this MS knowledge base article (couldn't find this addressed on this board elsewhere):
Non-administrators can not remap LPT1 to network printer…

Just a heads-up on something that a few might encounter, if a user has BOTH a local printer and the need to redirect to a network printer. MS says this is a "security" feature. Guess I lead a very sheltered life; never heard of an attack via LPT redirection…
Have anyone else experienced this yet?

LPT security, the latest craze…
I would like to know if this is also inherent in 2000, I will try to find this out as I have similar problem with 2000.

could you alter the application to use LPT2 and above for network printers and LPT1 for local printers

Yes, this is what we did as a workaround. Actually, we left the network printing application using LPT1, and changed the local printer port to be LPT2 for those few with a printer. But same effect, anyway.

I am having problems printing from arev to a network printer. I used the microsoft document you quoted and set up the printer the the net use command. I am able to print to the port (lpt6) from the dos window. In the application though, I get an error message when trying to print to that printer. The message is:
"the pathname for the output file is invalid. the printer has not been redirected."
Help!
