NLM_STATS Explanation Please (AREV Specific)

I wrote a program to test the relative efficiency of displaying messages to the screen (1. Using MSG and "UB", 2. Using MSG and "UB" and literal flag, 3. Using STATUP). For those of you curious about the results, depending on which server (second server numbers in parenthesis) I ran the test on, the results were about 16 (9) seconds for #1, 2 (2) seconds for #2, and .39 (.35) seconds for #3.
Getting back to the subject, what surprised me was that after running the program I ran NLM_STATS to check the stats for the MESSAGES and SYSMESSAGES file only to discover there was no logged activity. This remained true even after issuing a FLUSH and RESET command, copying all records onto themselves, and logging off and back on again.
So my question is, what do the statistics actually represent, if anything? Actual statistics for MESSAGES file follow:
