I'm trying to create a report that displays data grouped by multiple fields. For example I'm trying to do a grouping by Year and Month (I have a month number column and a Month Name column).

I don't need the Year and Month number to show up, just the Month name, but I can't seem to figure out how to get it to group correctly.

Hello Jason,

Grouping Data

You can make a report more meaningful by breaking the rows into groups. A group is a collection of rows that share a common value in one or more fields. For example, you might want to group all employees in the report by department. When you create a group by specifying a break field, ViP groups all rows that contain the same value in the break field together. Unlike sorting, however, ViP does not reorder the values in the groups.

When you create a group, ViP adds bands for the group header and group footer to the report layout area, and adds a group header and group footer to the band control area. You can create as many groups in a report as you need. If you create more than one group, ViP nests the groups in the order you created them. For example, you might group sales data by department, then by salesperson, and finally by item sold.

You can add fields, including calculated fields, to group header and group footer bands. For example, if your report groups data by department, you can create a field that contains a summary of the sales in each department group. You can also add graphics and other objects to a group band, the same way you add them to any other band.

Deleting a group header or group footer deletes the entire group, as well as any objects in the group header and footer. You can display a deleted group header and footer immediately after you delete a group by selecting Undo from the Report Designer Edit menu.

To create a group:

1. Choose Group from the Create menu and, in the Create Group dialog box, select the break field for the group.

The Report Designer creates a blank group header band and a blank group footer band for the new group.

2. To add fields to the group, select the group header or group footer where you want to include the field, choose Field from the Report Designer Create menu, and complete the Create Field dialog box.

(Alternative Procedures)

To reorder groups:

· In the band control area, select Reorder Bands, and complete the Reorder Bands dialog box.

To delete a group:

· Click inside the header or footer of the group you want to delete and press DEL.

Hope this helps,
