Cleaning up temporary sort files? (AREV Specific)

I have the general habit of occasionally going into the directory structure of out AREV 3.12 system and cleaning out what I guess to be temporary sort files that don't have todays date on them. So far I haven't seen any ill effects but I was wondering if I was doing the right thing? What are the file name structures like for a temporary sort file?
The file names I usually see are things like:
24f55a2
24f22a2i.000
91a6812i.00a
91a6812i.00b
R1715601.sfx
R2010295.vf1
Can anyone tell be where I might find the information to read about these sorts of temporary files and what they are related to? I assume that the system takes care of these most of the time but does anyone have any general rules of thumb on cleaning these up?
Thanks,

Check that:
(a) users aren't breaking out of these prematurely (eg, Ctrl-Alt-Del)
(b) users have delete privileges on the network for this path.
The other files may well be application based. Uncertain.

What's in the non .sfx/.vfx files?
The file names look kind of like NIC addresses. Perhaps part of the logon process changes the suspend file name to the NIC address? If users are suspending and switching off or ctl-alt-del that could explain those files.
