ISDN - IP routers (AREV Specific)

I have a client who has changed to accessing Arev(3.1)programs and data using Novell 5.1 over ISDN with IP routers (Not IPX). The Novell network is pure IP with IPX compatibility loaded. Internally, at each site, Arev works fine under this setup. When accessing another site over ISDN line it is so slow that it is not workable. The client has not installed an Arev NLM (against my advice), but has not experienced any data corruption problems in the past. Before converting to the above configuration, the client was accessing programs and data at other sites using T1 lines and IPX. There is minimal traffic which is the reason they wanted to downgrade to ISDN. They expected the system to run a little slower but nothing like this. The login process, e.g. used to take 30 to 40 seconds and now takes 5 minutes. Any ideas?

We had the same situation, but with a somewhat different configuration (all IPX over 256K fractional T1), and with the NLM. We were never quite able to speed up the login time (averaged 3.5 minutes; suspect we could have improved this by studying and changing the volume attaches for remote users), but were able to get sluggish though grudgingly accepted performance by localizing all but the main data tables, turning off indexing, and coming up with an MFS that tracked changes to the localized tables on the server so updates could be transferred to the C drive volumes of the remote workstations.
Later converted to W2K server with NT Service, installed a W2K Terminal Server with some web extensions, and use a web browser to get to the TS machine to run the Arev app locally. This runs rather well, and I believe you could keep the Novell server and just put in a TS on the network. We have fewer remote users now, but suspect that it would work with many more. I understand the Citrix product is considered "better" than TS, offering load balancing and management improvements, but we were "MS-"aquired so "best of breed" thinking has been repressed. Sigh.
