Hello Revsoft development community!

We are about to undertake the development of a major new software application that we intend to deliver as a complete web based application. We would like to develop the application as follows:

Database Storage - Revelation linear hash file system, either Advanced Revelation or OpenInsight on the 'back end'

Programming Language - We would ideally like to utilize RBasic functions and programming code directly from our web pages and controls. We would most likely blend with JAVA, XML and other web programming language variants.

Database Table Access - We would ideally like to DIRECTLY access the AREV/OI linear hash filing system tables from our web page controls for drop downs, data validations, and advanced reporting ( some type of ODBC/JDBC access from the web to the tables )

Development Tools - We would ideally like to provide the end users with tools as they exist in AREV/OI today (Database Manager, Table Builder, Popup and Msg designer, Index Maintenance utilities, import/export, etc…) directly from the web application WITHOUT the need to utilize either the AREV DOS or OI Windows applications directly

I have read enough about JREV and Livewater on this web site to get me interested. My question to the developer community is this: is this type of web based application development doable today using existing tools from RevSoft/other Rev developers, be it either via JREV, Livewater, or some combination of these and other tools, WITHOUT using OpenInsight to first develop the application, and then port it to the web? If using OI is imperative, what limitations exist in pieces of the application that will port to the web?

Any info provided would be much appreciated.

My company is in the process of delivering in a few weeks a set of 100% pure Java controls that access Arev/OI data through XML. The product consists of data-enabled controls on the front end and database specific ( OI in this case) back-ends, all written in Java.

The front end will have the Arev/OI feel( reads on lostfocus of primary key, pre/post focus events, multivalued or relational db access, variable length fields, etc.). Since everythig is pure Java, the plan is to allow developers to integrate these controls in their favorite Java development environment( from JRev to Forte, Visual Cafe, JBuilder, etc.)

We are currently in the process of writing the documentation and plan to make the public announcement in a few weeks as far as the licencing . Please see the JRev discussion thread for more info or e-mail me at [email protected].
