I have a client who's now upgrading his network to Netware 5.1 (from 4.11). The clients are Win 9x. Netware client version is 3.3 (SP1). Can he expect any problems with his OI app? He's got a multi-user version (2 or 4 users) and no NLM.

Oystein,

If you were using the NLM, there has been trouble in Netware 5.1 with no service pack, but I doubt that will be an issue without it.

If you are thinking that your client will someday use the NLM, Netware 5.1 with sp1 or sp2 works. Novell client v3.3 works with Arev and OI as well.

The NLM isn't absolutely necessary, particularly with relatively small installations. Above 5 or so, I would definitely recommend it, though. The same is true with NT. Another consideration is how busy the overall network is. The busier the network, the more the NLM helps improve performance. If it is going to run across any kind of WAN connection, I would definitely recommend it.

Kevin - thank you for the details and for setting my mind at ease! I don't really know what the current and established versions of Netware are, but I'll tell them to make sure they use at least SP1. All I know now is that it's 5.1.

Don - most of our clients (small and medium-sized museums (or perhaps tiny and small is closer to the truth)) say they can't afford the network products. (Come to think of it: This particular client should, being backed by one of the most successful industries in this country…)

I hear a lot of the same comment. What I tell them is this:

1. When you damage your database with a GFE, my charge to repair it, if I can at all, is $125.00 / hr, minimum 1 hour. If you have the NLM / NT service, there is no charge.

2. If you make a mess out of something and your last backup is over 48 hours old, then you'll have to recreate 2 days work (if I can't fix the mess).

My primary market is the home-care industry (which are mostly smallish businesses with vitrually no tech support resources at all). They are mostly incredibly cheap when it comes to technology. Mostly, they won't even pay for any benefits for their staff at all. They mostly treat their workers as "Per-Diem" staff whose work time is kept below 25 hours per week to avoid the "Full Time Employee" status for their state. Yet the owners / administrators are pulling down $125,000 per year. Go figger …
