A client of ours is having a problem with a simple procedure.

We have a spooler set up which is basically a set of text files in a

directory. Our spooler is supposed to be able to print or delete spool jobs from this directory by doing a PCPERFORM and running

TYPE filename ] port or DEL filename

However, since upgrading their hardware, they are unable to do that.

Upgrade and system info as follows:

Novell Netware 3.12 upgraded to Novell Netware 5.0 patch A

All workstations Win95B upgraded to Win98 (except 1 DOS)

NPP version 1.1.1.0

ARev version 3.111

Workstations have about 350K available in WHO screen and FILES=249

The following problems are arising:

If deleting or printing a spool file will get

- Illegal operation (Windows) most frequently

- On occasion the file will print but will get B114 Maximum number of variables exceeded immediately

Press F5 and type SUSPEND

- manually do a TYPE or DEL is fine but on exitting the SUSPEND get message R27 Unassigned StatUp

Whenever they logout get the following:

- Illegal Operation (I believe this occurs when it is clearing up temporary files and removing expired or printed spool jobs

I have logged into their system remotely and have not had the same problems. However, I was logging in through the only DOS machine that they have i.e. the problem appears to be with Win98 and not Netware.

Firstly, I am wondering whether it has something to do with the PCPERFORM, I believe it is practically the only place where we use it and whether upgrading ARev or the NPP to the latest version will resolve this problem.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Your files value is set way to high. Novell needs some of these for its own use. Try setting is back to about 200-210.
