Hi! I have only been in my current position since January and have never used AREV before (a complicated task indeed). Now I have run up against something I know nothing about. I believe they are called GFE's. I am getting the error Fatal Error Reading ) in file !…

Group Format Error:

OS FILE : \AREV\DATA\REV47740.OV

GROUP # : 8

Record length incorrect or frame linkage error.

I am running AREV 2.12 and have no idea as to how to fix this! Any idea? suggestions? What causes this? How can I fix it? Obviously I don't want to lose any data.

If you have a good backup, you can correct this with a restore.

Alternatively, if you have access to a TCL (:) prompt, you can use the DUMP utility to fix the GFE. Just type DUMP filename from the TCL prompt, where filename is the name of the file with the problem (not the OS filename). Press F1 to see what the various commands are in DUMP.

Since you can screw things up with dump if you don't know what you're doing, I recommend backing up the file to be worked on before you use DUMP, particularly if you're new at this.

It's possible that fixing a GFE using the DUMP utility will result in some lost records. In my experience, usually there is no loss, but sometimes there is, hence the first suggestion of restoring from a backup.

GFEs are usually caused by hardware problems, network problems, or incorrect driver settings. What is your setup?

P.S. Your handle seems to imply you're in Texas. Where in Texas?

I figured out that this was an Index problem, so I was able to fix it by using the clearfile !filename, removing the indexes and then adding them back. Thats seems to (hopefully) have fixed it. I think maybe a problem on the users PC may have caused it. I haven't seen it before. I am in downtown Houston, Texas.
