I modify an Arev application so that data entry screens accept French as well as English. Also need to print reports that will contain both French and English. I would appreciate any ideas !

What do you perceive the problems to be? We routinely produce multi-lingual apps in AREV and OI. The main problem is getting printouts to show the correct characters if using Windows printing from DOS (they changed the code tables from "OEM to ANSI"). But this usually just involves a symbolic to swap stuff around.

Barbara,

What other characters do you need to enter? I can remember several accents from my school days, such as è, é and ê. These are ascii characters 232, 233 and 234, respectively. How do users deal with these in other situations? By hitting Alt-232? Or does your system allow different languages?

Otherwise, I cannot imagine any processing that would be affected by the language the users use. Reports should spit out whatever the users put in.

Can you think of any specific problematic situations?

Kenny

If you need special characters, I have mentioned a utility called fontedit.com from PC magazine here before. It lets you repaint any ASCII character's screen depiction.

Say you need a cidilla. You can hold down ALT and then type 135 to get ç. It may depend on your browser's character set as to what you see.

Printing might be a hassle, but on-screen this will work just fine. You can use ICONVs and OCONVs in symbolics to remap the characters for printing the equivalents, e.g. ç appears as c

I am genuinely touched by these responses but personally have no problems with being teased. It might be an English thing but we have a long tradition of poking fun at those we respect ;-)
