Problems have been with the client for a while. Initially the P100 was the server/workstation, which operated alone very satisfactorily, when the second user logged on there were delays and hang ups. They then tried to run from the P166 (workstation2) with the exact same symptoms.
A last ditch problem was to operate from a separate server, hence the NT server. The problems seems to have followed them, with only one user there is generally no problems, two users log on and there is a general slowing up or even lockup. If they removed one user after the lock up the other seems to be able to carry on unimpeded.
For your information the following is the setup:
File server P200+ 32Mb RAM 2+ Gb Hard disk drive NT4.0 with serv pak 2 on it.
Nothing queer about the setup as we have used it in a lot of other sites with no ill effects.
Workstation1 P100 16 Mb RAM 2Gb Hard disk drive.
Workstation2 P166 32 Mb RAM 2Gb Hard disk drive.
Network is 10 Base system. Network protocol is NETBUI.
Does anyone have any ideas on what to look for? The NT Service seems overkill for a 2 user system. Thanks for your help,
Matt Crozier

Matt-
ARe you using Arev or OpenInsight? What OS is running on the workstations? Does switching to another network driver eliminate the problems you're experiencing?

Thanks Tracey,
This is for OIWG. The Workstations are Windows 95 with write-caching and new locking semantics disabled. I haven't tried another network driver because I thought the NPP was more robust. Would you suggest I try the Byte Range locking driver?
Matt.

Hi Matt/Bil,
The NPP does the necessary work that prevents the OS from caching. That causes the system to run slower with multiple users. The old byte-range driver is not supported because it does not prevent the OS caching and thus leads to GFE's. BTW With an NT Server, we suggest the NT Service for both data integrity and performance reasons.

Cam,
Hmmm, that's what I thought, although in this case a second user slows down the system so much and even appears to hang sometimes. They are also getting GFE's while using the NPP so there must be something wrong with the network setup but I can't figure out what. The locking of records between workstations works OK. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Matt.
