I have some OIPI reports that sometimes come out funny on one particular printer.

All the reports are fixed character width (10 point Courier New) made with one OIPI TEXT 'message' per line.

The prints are 92 characters wide. The error is a jump after the 26th and 90th characters of each line. It's like half a space is inserted after the 26th character, and a whole space after the 90th character.

My usual printer (printer A) is a HP LaserJet 4000N, with a PostScript driver. The other printer (printer B) is a HP Color LaserJet 4600N, with a PCL driver. The problem occurs on the latter printer.

To be more precise the problem occurs when A is the Windows standard printer, and I change to B in the OIPI Preview window before I go ahead and print. It does not happen if B is the Windows standard printer. I can change printer back and forth how much I like as long as B is standard.

There is one other thing I see that could be related to the problem. When the Preview window first comes up the first print page is painted in the window. When I change from A to B the preview changes slightly. It's like all the characters move a pixel or so. Perhaps they also change their shape. It sort of makes sense to printer-ignorant me that the preview changes, since there might be slight differences in how different printers render their characters. But it's only in the problematic case I see this change in the preview. In the other cases the preview is rock steady. So the explanation for the change might be something different, that has to do with the printing problem.

I haven't tried to change printer programmatically.

I've done my tests both in OI 4.1.2 and 7.0. (I just upgraded to the latter, without any changes to the app. E.g, I have kept my START32 and STOP32 calls. I don't know if they should be removed, or if this is at all relevant.)

Anybody have any clues? It's not all-important to get fixed, but if the problem is of a general nature I expect to hear about it from clients too.

Plain old Courier fails spectacularly in new ways on both printers. I don't even want to think about it.

Lucida Console comes out OK.

Arial does too (except I can't use proportional fonts since I do formatting in the x direction by counting characters).
