Installing / Upgrading OI... (OpenInsight 32-bit)

Folks,
Couple of questions:
1) We are currently running 9.2.1 and I want to install a local version of the latest OI 9.3.2 or even 9.4 when it's ready; by installing the latest version locally (which I assume has updates to client install / dlls) will that affect the outcome / results when I use our default 9.2.1 app?
2) Our last major upgrade was from 8.03 to 9.21; this was a large upgrade and involved a lot of testing; with that said; how smooth would you consider the Upgrade to the latest OI version compared to our initial major upgrade?
Trying to determine if the testing needs to be as involved as going from 8.03 to 9.21?
Thanks
Paulo

Your question regarding the different client installs is valid and important when doing very thorough testing. To properly test any version of OpenInsight you should run the corresponding ClientSetup.exe for that system. This is important to you because installing a more recent version locally will require you to install the corresponding client setup which is newer than the version running on the network.
There are no known issues running a newer client setup with an older version of OpenInsight but we don't recommend doing this because we don't have the capacity to do regression testing on all of the possible combinations of OpenInsight and each client setup. For the most part newer client setups are backwards compatible.
This may be fine for a development workstation but for production testing I recommend you ensure the older client setup has been removed and the OpenInsight version matches the installed client setup.
Regarding the second question, based on the technical support requests the process of upgrading between minor versions in 9.x has been fairly smooth unless you are using features that are being updated. The MV BFS components, SQL connector, and O4W are features that are being actively worked on and the driving force behind a lot of updates. You're likely to see the most changes in these areas of the system. The core OI system has been stable between versions.
Each version upgrade has a readme file. If you check it for OpenInsight features that have been updated you can get a sense for what areas to test before moving the upgrade from production into development.
