I share tables between OpenInsight and AREV applications. I have discovered that while locking prevents simultaneous updates by ARev users or by OpenInsight users, it does not prevent an OpenInsight user updating the same row simultaneously as an Arev user. Consequently I am experiencing GRE's on a large scale. Please help.

Config: NLM server 1.5 , AREV 3.12, OpenInsight 3.7.1, Netware 3.12

[notag]This implies that you are running different network drivers on AREV vs OI. In AREV type WHO at TCL and in OI run NETDRV.EXE (whilst logged out) to validate this.

You can do this through AREV by typing edit systables voc at the TCL, on the last line of the file that opens you should see 6F's in a row. This signifies that the NLM is running correctly. From within OpenInsight you can check this by going into the System Editor and opening the Table SYSTABLES, and the Row SYSOBJ. That is not caused by a lack of locking or even having Arev and OI update the same record at the same time. It is usually caused by: 1) Client-side OS-level cache of part of the data file, which is not possible when using the NLM (or NT Service) with the correct driver; 2) Arev and OI are using different LH drivers; 3) The file has a data corruption problem that pre-dates the installation of the NLM, in which case you need to create a new file and copy the data over at the record level and replace the old file with the new file (to make sure that there is absolutely no chance of corruption in the file) Cameron Purdy Revelation Software </QUOTE> —- === At 28 JUL 1999 10:24PM Christopher Wood wrote: === <QUOTE>Sorry for the typo it should be GFE </QUOTE> —- === At 28 JUL 1999 10:46PM Christopher Wood wrote: === <QUOTE>Thanks. In addition to loading the NLM on the server you must change both AREV and OI to use the special NLM drivers also installed on the workstation diskette. These are referred to as the IPX/Netware Multiuser drivers. Fortunately the NLM is licensed per server so you do not need to pay extra for the AREV. Just follow the workstation instructions for both the AREV and OI sections! So at least complete the workstation installation for Arev and then login with Arev LANPACK to set the correct driver. Make sure that works first. Use REVPARAM files with ServerOnly=1 to ensure no one accesses the data files with any other driver. Right now to your OI problem. Use NETDRV to reset the driver to NLM 1.5 driver. What is the Fatal Engine error number ? Probally got some missing files in Windows\System directory. You have the correct driver for ARev but not for OI. The driver for OI must be IPX/Netware Multi-user Driver ver. 1.5 to run both OI and ARev on the same server accessing the same NLM's. If, when you run OI, you are receiving a Fatal Open Engine Error (and I'm assuming it's ENG0805), you may need to install Novell's client on your workstation. You may be able to get away with placing NWCALLS.DLL and NWIPXSPX.DLL, both which come with Novell's Client32, in the workstations' \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory if you'd like to retain use Microsoft's client. Lastly, make sure you have the REVPARAM file placed with text 'SERVERONLY=1' in all directories containing an .lk file (anywhere linear hash is going to be accessed by ARev or OI). Ok I have the correct drivers installed and OpenInsight boots without error. However I still have my original problem that there is no co-ordination of locks between AREV and OpenInsight. Should I install Novell's client32 to replace microsoft client? Your comment re REVPARAM was new to me. Please confirm no file extension and no quotes round SERVERONLY=1. FYI locking only works in OpenInsight for our Windows workstations. NT terminals do not seem to co-ordinate locks with Windows workstations. </QUOTE> —- === At 30 JUL 1999 04:57AM Christopher Wood wrote: === <QUOTE>Thanks. Problem is now solved. I installed 1.5 driver in OpenInsight and cured the ENG0805 problem by replacing NWCALLS.DLL and NWIPXSPX.DLL in the system directory with the latest version. </QUOTE> —- === At 30 JUL 1999 06:50AM Tony Marler @ Prosolve Software wrote: === <QUOTE>Christopher, I think you'll find that Stephen is mistaken on the Network Drivers. The two drivers you need are: OpenInsight - IPX/Netware Multi-user Driver ver. 1.5 Arev - IPX/Advanced Netware v1.50 By selecting this OI driver you may get the Eng0805 error again. This can be resolved (normally) by copying the two dll's as Stephen mentions. As for the REVPARAM file, yes, it is just REVPARAM with no extension containing SERVERONLY=1. Hope this resolves your problem. Tony </QUOTE> —- === At 30 JUL 1999 11:22AM Stephen Revelation wrote: === <QUOTE>Chistopher, Tony is correct.
