Is the ODBC driver designed such that it works in utf8 mode?

I am trying to pass Japanese characters back to excel and can not seem to get anything other than garbage for the Japanese characters.

I can not get the ODBC driver to work with utf8 data, is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

The ODBC driver is not coded to work with UTF8 data. We are unaware of Revelation's plans in this direction.

That is not good news.

If you have a product that you wish to sell in Japan; what options can you offer your users for graphically building reports?

My thought was to offer Crystal Reports and the ODBC driver; if this does not work what does?

Any ideas are appreciated.

If the question is, if I use Excel to get data from OI via the ODBC driver do I see the same problems with utf8 data; then the answer is yes.

No it was a suggestion that you use Excel or Word as your reporting device. The ODBC driver won't work with UTF data period.

How would a user access data in OI from Word or Excel if not via the ODBC driver?

Umm … OLE? Not flash but works.

It'd be more of a case of defining text files for them to report against using filters in the mail merge view - not ideal but…

No so stupid :) You *could* use OLE via xRev.DLL and pull the data out of OE. It would take some VBScript work however…

This is what I need to be able to do:

(1) Create a series of standard reports that we can ship with our product.

(2) If the users wishes, allow them to buy a module that allows customization of these reports and creation of new reports.

All of the reports are against a large OI database containing multiple tables. Some of the data is resident in memory and is accessed via calculated columns.

Currently my thinking was ODBC and Crystal reports, however we now have a potential client in Japan and the ODBC driver does not support utf8.

I can think of any number of ways of doing (1), none of the suggestions (unless I am missing something) would be useable by and end user to do (2).

We'd wait on RevSoft's plans for UTF8 as any suggestions on ways to deal with this otherwise might prove expensive in terms of consultancy. Having said that we might have some tricks up our sleeve later this year but nothing to make plans on at this stage.
