Hi all,

I am having an ODBC error problem with setting up the sample app in the Getting Started manual in OI (page 102). Using the C/S Workspace as instructed, selecting "DataSource" and going with the ODBC type, I don't get any (ODBC) list as mentioned.

I checked the ODBC.INI (the book said it was in the Windows directory, however, I am using Win2K, so it would be in the WINNT directory… would this have anything to do with it?) and there are several ODBC entries in the ODBC.INI I looked at.

Even when I change the "DataSource" to look in the \tutorial\product.dbf as opposed to the ODBC, I get nothing.

I double clicked the "DataSource" row and it gives the message "No ODBC Data Sources Were Found" .

What am I doing wrong?

Once again, thank you all in advance.

Baxter

I don't have the GS manual handy but just created a setup so let's see if we can make this work

My Environment: Win2k (current patch), OI 4.0.2

I have MySql (my database for my radio station) working and created a odbc connection from control panel/admin tools/data sources. Once the connection was created I then used excel to get data .. this is a great test. If it works here it should work anywhere

Then I went to my OI32 App and went into Client/Server. Then click on the 'new' button. Starting with connection.

In DataSource 'Value' I press alt-down and got a listing of all my odbc data sources. I the selected the one I wanted. When I tried saving it I got an error from mysql saying that transactions werent enabled. So I went to the Tools menu 'Connection Defaults' and unchecked transactions.

Then It saved correctly to DSIG_SONGLIST

Now I went to tools and selected Query Window. Prompted for datasource .. scrolled and got dsig_songlist, login .. entered the login and password.

For the query I simply

select * from songlist and clicked the little running man (arnold?)

Got the data back .. Much faster in 32bit ..

]] I checked the ODBC.INI (the book said it was in the Windows directory, however, I am using Win2K, so it would be in the WINNT directory… would this have anything to do with it?) and there are several ODBC entries in the ODBC.INI I looked at.

Don't worry about where it is .. if windows knows about it OI will find it (at least here)

]]Even when I change the "DataSource" to look in the \tutorial\product.dbf as opposed to the ODBC, I get nothing.

I double clicked the "DataSource" row and it gives the message "No ODBC Data Sources Were Found" .

Once again .. if you have created the odbc datasource then can you access in Excel.

Let me know .. be happy to help

Hi Baxter

I notice this a OI 16 bit query. To get a list of data sources you need to do a bit of 'thunking'

Here is an example of my ODBC.INI after 'thunking'. It is painless believe me.

ODBC 32 bit Data Sources

MS Access 97 Database=Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb) (32 bit)

dBASE Files=Microsoft dBase Driver (*.dbf) (32 bit)

Excel Files=Microsoft Excel Driver (*.xls) (32 bit)

FoxPro Files=Microsoft FoxPro Driver (*.dbf) (32 bit)

Text Files=Microsoft Text Driver (*.txt; *.csv) (32 bit)

Visual FoxPro Tables=Microsoft Visual FoxPro Driver (32 bit)

Visual FoxPro Database=Microsoft Visual FoxPro Driver (32 bit)

ECDCMusic=Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb) (32 bit)

ODBC Data Sources

MS Access 97 Database=Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb) (32 bit)

dBASE Files=Microsoft dBase Driver (*.dbf) (32 bit)

Excel Files=Microsoft Excel Driver (*.xls) (32 bit)

FoxPro Files=Microsoft FoxPro Driver (*.dbf) (32 bit)

Text Files=Microsoft Text Driver (*.txt; *.csv) (32 bit)

Visual FoxPro Tables=Microsoft Visual FoxPro Driver (32 bit)

Visual FoxPro Database=Microsoft Visual FoxPro Driver (32 bit)

ECDCMusic=Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb) (32 bit)

You need to copy the all the ODBC 32 bit Data Sources as above then change the heading to ODBC Data Sources. It's a easy as that.

Enjoy 'thunking'

Oh .. me bad

I hadn't noticed it was 16bit.

If I were you I would run not walk to your 32bit upgrade.

The Client/Server does use memory. It does hand this very well .. but the quickness that I have seen in the 32bit verion is really nice. And you don't have to worry about controls not getting all the data etc.

Yesterday I was playing with my SongDB, for my radio station, and loaded the song list (13K records with 20 columns and lots of data in the columns) and it filled the query screen .. POP!! (just like batman).

I know this is not a lot of data but it was much much faster.

Anyway .. sorry if I led you down the wrong path with my last post .. BUT MOVE TO 32bit :-)
