I am currently in 7.3 OI

What if I want to know who has a recorded locked? Is there a way of finding out or do i have to populate a table where i have the user, mac address, table and file that is locked? I looked in the help area and could not find anything relating to what i need. I do not want to have the user sitting around all day waiting for a file to become unlocked. They should be able to call the other user up to ask them to close the file in question so they can update the record.

If you use the 4.6 UD it comes with a manager that shows you all locks and allows unlocks.

While the UD 4.6 is a great tool for system administrators, is there a way to find this information out from the client?

This way the end user could resolve the issue without having to get IT involved.

Does LIST_USER_LOCKS help at all? From the System Monitor type "EXEC LIST_USER_LOCKS" then press the OK button in the Window and the locks should display.

Sean, thank you very much. This is a great help. I was under the impression I had to upgrade to the 4.6 driver (my customer is currently using 2.1) to see/clear record locks. There have been several times where a record is left locked when someone's pc crashes and it's difficult to figure out who had the record locked. I've had to ask them to reboot the server to clear a simple lock during the middle of the day (not cool).

PS You need to click "Show Locks" in the window (List_User_Locks).

Thanks again,

Harold

The 'OS file" shown, for the locked record key, is incorrect. shows SYSINCLUDE.

Computer name is also not shown.

It has always worked for us from version 7.x through 9.1.

Sometimes you have to restart OI on you workstation to get it going.

OS file names usually get out of sync on subsequent clicks of the "show locks" button. Best to close the form and reopen it.

I was wanting the same thing to have the end user know who has the record lock so they can just call the other end user without involving the IT department.

So far it sounds like only IT has that ability not users.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

I found that LIST_USER_LOCKS does not show any locked records even when I know there are some locked.

Right now before i have the program run off of a server i have the whole thing on a thumb drive and connected to my work's server using novell at the same time. Could that cause the issue of me not seeing locked files? I decided to create my own log of locked records until i can get OI locked record UD working.

The reason is, I want it to try to lock for like 5 seconds and if still locked that a message will pop up saying who and where(PC MAC) the record is locked and the end user can do the running around finding the other user involved without having IT getting involved unless really necessary.

Matthew,

I had similar desires, wanting to know who has the lock, wanting to attempt the lock "X" many times, and wanting to abort the lock attempt.

I too created my own set of procedures to achieve my goals.

If you you would like to share ideas, let me know. I would be more than happy to share.

Possibly. Do you more than one LH service in your environment?

I decided to create my own log of locked records until i can get OI locked record UD working.

I've had success with a simple MFS which updates a locklist table when a lock succeds. The table is keyed by table*key, the colums are locked_by and Locked_timestamp. I don't bother to delete the row on unlock. The table to cannot list only active locks, but is always correct about who holds a lock when I cannot get it.

I think i have it working with one user but have not been able to check on 2 or more users… it is acting like i have only one user license. And talking to my co-worker. I should have 250 user license. So I have more research to do on the system i am using.

Richard I will post what i have when it is all working. I have it save by record_number:'*':table and inside is user and mac_add.

I also clean up the table when it is unlocked so that the data does not get to large and created a form to do master unlocks of records if IT does need to get involved. Keep fingers crossed to see if it will work.

There is an example of a MFS that returns the Station ID of the user who has a lock. You will find it on page 110 of the MFS.PDF you will find on this website under Support, KnowledgeBase, All Products by Function/Functionality, Functions/Subroutines/Programming as Modifying Filing Systems (MFS) or at http://www.revelation.com/knowledge.nsf/ec5f98b5d505afa1852566f5006111c4/82b6cc6c6e0f745a8525666600723698?OpenDocument
