Or any mfs gurus out there.

i have run into an odd situation ..

VOLUME MFS Arev 3.12

I am tracking processes that happen to a table including create.file, delete.file, read, write, delete etc.

It turns out that if you create a file from tcl

MAKETABLE MFSVOL TABLENAME

this will hit the mfs with a code=12 (create.file).

BUT if I use the menu options this code (12) never gets passed through the mfs chain .. sigh why oh why

IF THIS IS TRUE and it isn't just me futzing it up .. how can I know that a table has been created? possibly some combination of traking the mediamap and chicken bones?

all help appreciated ..

Unfortunately like you have found out, the MFS only works like 99% of the time not 100% like we all thought.

CREATE.FILE only goes thru the MFS if it is done thru the TCL MAKEFILE command.

CLEAR.FILE only goes thru the MFS if it is done thru the RBASIC CLEARFILE command.

RENAME.FILE only goes thru the MFS if it is done thru the TCL RENAMEFILE command.

MOVE.FILE only goes thru the MFS if it is done thru the TCL FILECOPY command.

DELETE.FILE only goes thru the MFS if it is done thru the TCL DELETEFILE command.

READ.RECORD only goes thru the MFS if it is done thru the RBASIC READ command.

WRITE.RECORD only goes thru the MFS if it is done thru the RBASIC WRITE command.

DELETE.RECORD only goes thru the MFS if it is done thru the RBASIC DELETE command.

Note that sometimes other commands, use the commands that goes thru the MFS, within themselves. Unfortunately, you have found one of the commands (definefile) that bypases the MFS.

Wow, that's news to me. Are any of these "features" in OI32?

Thanks for the note ..

I remember some discussions when 3 was coming out. There was a big move to subroutinize a lot of the processes further and of course rename many of the commands.

There were some people doing the re-write who really shouldn't have been and who didn't understand the *intricacies(sp?)* of the process chain.

I just didn't remember the number of places that got .. err .. fubar'd

thanks for the list .. i will test these against OI to see if there is a great carry over of .. talented creativity
