Server (OpenInsight 32-Bit)

I am using OI 7.2.2 with the UD.
The reason for this testing is we have a user that wants to deploy on a server.
I think I am missing something in terms of setting up the UD, what is it?

If you map the drive instead say to f: then run from the mapped drive it will work.

What if I don't want to use mapped drives (the mapped drive could vary from machine). What if I want to use unc paths?
Is this a known bug?

I can also switch to the All Networks driver 2.1 and that works.
Have I hit a known bug, or am I missing some configuration issue?

we too have had some issues with 'mapped' drives. I believe that it has been reported but you might want to check the 'possiblity for improvement' tracker

This is not a complex question, is the Universal driver meant to work with unc paths or not?
If it is meant to work, what might be the cause of the errors I am seeing?

i was told in the beginning that it worked with unc .. but we have had to go to drive mapping and even keep the data inside of OI directory to resolve the different problems we had.

Will someone from Revelation please confirm that the Universal driver supports unc paths? Or for that matter confirm that it doesn't.
Will this work, or am I wasting my time trying to get it to work?

The UD does load relatives paths on 7.2.2. Just checked with a Windows 2003 server and UD 3.0.0.3.
Does your DBT file have UNC paths or drive letters?

Jim,
The Universal Driver does support UNC.
FS1020 means that you are unable to open the Revlocks file on the client workstation. Could it be a permission thing?

FWIW I'm using UNCs with the NT/Windows Service. I changed all the DBT attaches to UNCs. The only gotcha I found in v7.11 is that the pattern checks on many of the table tools (e.g. Table Builder) won't accept UNCs, but this seems to be fixed in v7.2x

Notice this all on the same machine using the same user account, XP pro running as Administrator.
Any ideas?

Are you using TcpIp or Named Pipes?
Are both mappings made using the same Administrator? Is it the local admin or domain admin?

Local, I am doing all this testing on a stand alone machine. I was having the same problem testing on a network but to try and simplify the whole thing I started testing OI using unc paths on my normal workstation (a laptop).

Jim,
I have been able to replicate your setup on a 2003 Server, and have not received any problems using TcpIp or Named Pipes. What are the contents of the registry keys HKLM -] Software -] Revsoft -] Universal Driver -] 3.0?
How about the contents of your revparam?
What is the location of your revparam?
What happens if you remove the revparam?
Is there another copy of the UD running somewhere on the network?
I think your setup is a little atypical, doing all this on a server - esp when the server is an XP workstation. Any chance of putting it on a server and using your machine as a client?

Some clarification.
If I install the OI on a remote machine (elsewhere on my LAN).
With the UD:
(1) I can run a single copy via mapped drives.
(2) Running a second copy from another machine on the LAN at the same time as the first is open fails with a gpf.
(3) I can not run at all with unc paths.
With the All Networks driver
(1) I can run multiple copies via both unc and mapped drives.

That is what I was doing originally, see my last message. I started doing all the testing on the laptop figuring if I can not get it running on a laptop using unc paths I had no hope on a server. If I create a shared directory on a Windows XP Pro box called oi32 and run from my Dell laptop via a shortcut \\wmsnew\oi32\oinsight.exe I get the same errors as I do when I run locally.

Jim - In the Support section, Knowledge Base, Network Products, by Type of Article, Documentation, you should be able to find a PDF copy of the Universal Driver Installation Manual which may prove helpful in sorting this out.

OK, that is the problem.
(1) The UD requires a client install. Which I have not done.
(2) The UD requires install and setup on the server. Which again I have not done.
We normally only sell run time copies of OI.
This user needs a server install. So we are using a SDP for I think 5 users.
Three questions:
(1) Does the UD cost extra?
(2) Why would I want to use the UD?
(3) Is it possible to integrate the client install into an install script (we use NSIS) that we have for our product? Not details seem to be available for what the UD client install does. Same question for the server install of the UD driver.
(3) For development should be using OI in UD mode or with the All networks driver?

Unless I am missing something for development purposes I should be using the "All networks driver".
That being the case, how do I tell which files (if any) on my system have been created while using the UD?

Or is that not a problem?

We have a utility that will return back an array of which files are which type for release with the next SENL. Given the way that schedule keeps slipping if you mail us we can send you a pre-release. It is only a problem if you deploy to non UD3.

Jim,
It may be simpler and more complicated that you think.
If you are using a fairly recent copy of OI, you already have the UD client installed. You can check this by going into Netdrv.exe. The Universal 3.0.0.2 or 3.0.0.3 are equally good.
The UD Server side files install when you purchase (and install) the UD.
As to your questions:
1. Yes. It is an add-on product.
2. The UD coordinates file locking on the server which is faster that allowing the workstations to each hold their own locks. It also ends the chance of GFEs. You might want to read this for more details.
3. You probably will not need to do this. As I said the UD client is built into OI for the last few years.
4] Depends. At this point you can use it if you are supporting clients that are all using the UD client. If you have some people that are using older network product (like the 2.1), you probably want to develop with the same driver they have.
