Hi everyone, there is something in the edittable functionality that I really miss: is it possible to make the height of the cells (or better, of the rows) expand automatically when word wrapping is enabled? What I mean with that, is some sort of behavior as commonly found in any MS Word table. If not, is there any OLE control available on the market? Thanks a lot,

Stefano

Stefano,

Not possible in edit tables.

If it's just for presentation and not for data entry you might, with some additional programming, find an alternative among the OI controls and/or an OLE browser control.

Perhaps an OLE RTF control with a table?

Can't tell you about OLE controls on the market.

Did Sprezzatura say they're working on a grid control???

Not that I recall, but we are. There are three possible options for Stefano:

1.) Mike Ruane discussed Revelation's intent to enhance the edittable control for OpenInsight 7.0. I don't know if word-wrapping and stretching the height of the rows will be included but some of the proposed upgrades will be pretty cool.

2.) Check out the EasyGrid OLE control. We were surprised how functional this grid control was within OpenInsight "out of the box". However, we never tested this fully because of option #3.

3.) Wait for our OLE control. As nice as EasyGrid appeared to be, we preferred to use a control that was designed primarily for OpenInsight (like we did for our other OLE controls.) One of the key features of our grid control will be to allow adjustable row heights so that multi-line (i.e. word-wrapped) text can be entered. In fact, I believe that is already supported, along with the ability to "merge" cells (i.e. have one cell extend itself over multiple rows and/or columns). Each cell is able to store a virtually unlimited amount of text as well.

Sounds great! Will this require modifying existing code that is used in handling Edittables? Will this also replace the need for the CreateCellButton?

Thanks

We are trying hard to minimize the code changes. To that end we are creating property names that are the same or similar to the edittable (i.e. ARRAY, LIST, etc.) However, keep in mind that this *is* a different control being integrated through OLE and therefore there are some differences that can't be avoided.

Also consider that data-binding probably won't be available either. We have done some preliminary work with creating our own data-binding connections via OLE controls but Mike hinted at the possibility that the ability to data-bind OLE controls could be introduced in OI 7.0. Therefore we are going to suspend our work in this area to see how far Revelation gets.

Yes, the Create_Cell_Button logic won't be needed as we will have dropdown combo-box support.

Thanks Don,

I've checked the EasyGrid OLE control… it looks interesting however, I'd prefer something designed primarily for OpenInsight.

When is your OLE control scheduled? What about pricing and conditions?

Do you have any more info about OpenInsight 7.0 (maybe I should ask this question to Mike Ruane)?

Thanks again,

Stefano

It's hard to say when it is scheduled as we have been forced to focus on client projects as of late and therefore are spending less time on the control. Because we have "grand ideas" for this control, it will probably be released in versions. That is, 1.0 with some basic and essential features (yet better than the edittable), 2.0 with more features, etc. If I were to take a wild guess I'd say maybe in a couple of months we'll roll out "version 1.0". We haven't discussed pricing yet, but it will be different from our other OLE controls since this is definitely a much more complicated control. Licensing will probably be the same, i.e. per serial number.

I'll list what I recall:

1. It will sport a new and modern looking IDE.

2. The toolset is being designed within OpenInsight as much as possible.

3. The System Editor will have configurable color-codes for stored procedures.

4. The Form Designer will use modeless property sheets so you can modify design-time properties much easier.

5. A slider control has been added.

6. A tab control is being added.

7. It is being co-designed for Windows and Linux (albeit these will probably be licensed separately.)

8. Revelation has stressed that all of our current OpenInsight development will work in OpenInsight 7.0. That is, there are no changes to already documented component structures although they will like be using reserved and undocumented areas to enhance their functionality.
