A client showed me an article saying OpenInsight for Linux works has MySQL functionality. The client is starting to make plans based on extrapolations of this information. I need to check that the client has their facts right. Can someone tell me:

1) Is the MySQL feature so that OI can access data outside of OI, for other apps to access data in an OI database, or both?

2) Is the MySQL feature available under OI for Windows?

Thanks for your feedback

Stephen,

for OIL RTI or some other person with experience will have to answer .. but for the windows version ..

1) Is the MySQL feature so that OI can access data outside of OI, for other apps to access data in an OI database, or both?

There isn't a 'mysql' feature .. OI uses the mySql ODBC driver for that connection. This connetion come with OpenInsight.

There is an ODBC driver (read only) that is available from RTI to allow external applications to get data from OpenInsight. This connection is an add on to OpenInsight and is charged seperately.

2) Is the MySQL feature available under OI for Windows?

Yes .. mySql is accessible from OI in windows. The basic tools are there for connection to ANY database that has a ODBC driver. API for datasets that masks 90% of the connection work and then lower connection for those of us who like to get a little more control.

We have used it for connections to Oracle, mySql, SqlServer

Any further questions please feel free to ask

Thanks

One more question – If I want to port a OI native table to MySQL, how do I handle the multivalued fields?

Normilization :-)

All associated mvs would have to go into a separate table…

john is technically correct .. but it really depends on why data is being saved out on the sql database.

We had a situation once where it just had to be out there .. clients 'technical' (and i use the term loosely) people wouldn't let them use a product if data wasn't stored .. not accessed just stored (realtime warehouse).

In a case like this you can just write it out .. mvs and all.

If normalization is something you need you can handle that pretty easily through routines ..

more questions .. just ask

Connectivity for MySql for Window or MySql for Linux is implemented via ODBC. In Linux the UnixOpenOdbc libraries plus the MySql driver are also needed. You can use the Client server workspace, datasets, XoMethod, QryMethod DsMethod functions. A MySql BFS is bubbling in the lab.

cool .. so it does work as it in linux as it does in windows .. you guys .. if you weren't so tall i'd give you a big wet one (well maybe not .. not into beards )
