To rehash an old question, does anyone know if the line MAPI=1 appears in the win.ini file if only outlook express is installed?

All our computers have outlook installed so I can't check here.

As OI can't talk to express I really need to be able to determine only mapi clients.

The help I've received so far has been excellent and if I can ensure that I can distinguish between mapi and non mapi clients, I can finally put this mapi thing to rest.

Mark,

If you haven't got a 'MAPI=1' line in your WIN.INI file then treat as MAPI is NOT installed on that workstation. It's as simple as that. (And IRC Outlook Express is not a MAPI client, though Outlook is)
