OIPI (OIPI)

We have a client who has a network with Windows 7 workstaions just installed with OpenInsight Version9.2. The printers work fine under Microsoft Word & Excel, but are extremely slow to activate under OI - like several minutes before anything happens. He does have a couple of workstations with Windows XP, but I do not think that is the problem. Any clues?

Are you using OIPI or OIPI.NET.

They are using OIPI.net

If you are printing a large addtable report oipi.net is very slow rendering. Also OIPI.net will be slow starting up for the first time but not several minutes. What happens if you try running the reports using OIPI (change the cfg_oipi record in the sysenv table to vsprinter).

In June I reported to Bryan/Jared et al "Just installed the latest client for 9.2.1 and I am seeing 1- 3 minute INIT calls – not just the first time but every time. This seems to be using PRINTER2 – any idea where to look?". We never got to the bottom of it and we reverted to PRINTER1.

I believe that one of the things the control underlying OIPI.NET does when you start it up is to check the device configuration of the attached printer(s) - and I think I remember some issue relating to the default printer being a network printer, or only having network printers attached, that made the initialization slow.
Is the default printer set to be a network share? Do you have local printers defined, or only network shares? Are they attached as though they're local printers (ie, you've defined a local printer that has the network printer as its "port"), or directly over the network? Are the network printers located within the same local network (workgroup/domain), or are they truly "remote"?
If, for testing purposes, you set your default printer to a local printer, and/or remove network printers from your configuration, does OIPI.Net start up more quickly?

Thanks. I will check on site and get back to the forum.

Interesting stuff thanks Bryan. It is a network printer. For now deliverable timescales dictate that we stick with PRINTER1 but as soon as the mad dash to go live is over we'll explore.

Ok - I have now been into the table SYSENV - CFG_OIPI and changed what it showed - VSPRINTER2 - to VSPRINTER1. The problem of slowness then goes away as do a number of other issues - like we can also now print Portrait which we could not do under Printer2. I am going to investigate further.
